In today’s competitive business landscape, having clarity and confidence in making important purchasing decisions is key to long-lasting success. At Prabhat we specialize in providing top-notch engineered rubber products. In this article, we'll delve into and debunk some common myths surrounding the long-term quality of rubber products, shedding light on the good practices and dispelling misconceptions.
Myth #1: All Rubber Products are Created Equal One prevalent myth is the assumption that all rubber products are interchangeable. In reality, rubber formulations vary significantly based on the intended application. Different elastomers, such as natural rubber, silicone, EPDM, and neoprene, offer unique properties like heat resistance, chemical compatibility, or flexibility. Choosing the right rubber compound is crucial to ensure optimal performance in specific environments. Myth #2: Blooming is Bad One prevalent misbelief is that the occurrence of blooming in rubber products is a sign of deterioration. However, nothing could be further from the truth! You may be interested to know that during the compounding stage in a gasket’s production, an important ingredient called Paraffin Wax is added to the rubber mixture, which is released by the rubber over time and its function is to preserve the rubber over long periods. This release of Paraffin Wax causes the rubber to look white on the surface, which is called “blooming.” Blooming is a protective mechanism that ensures the rubber's durability over the long term. Blooming from paraffin wax on rubber gaskets is a common occurrence and is generally not harmful to the rubber itself. Paraffin wax is often used as a processing aid or as part of the formulation in rubber compounds to enhance processing characteristics and improve certain properties. When paraffin wax migrates to the surface of the rubber and forms a bloom, it may appear as a white powdery or waxy substance. While the bloom itself is not typically detrimental to the rubber's integrity, it can attract dust and dirt, which may impact the appearance of the gasket. In most cases, the bloom can be wiped off without causing any damage to the rubber gasket. However, if the gasket is exposed to extreme conditions, such as high temperatures or harsh chemicals, the long-term performance of the rubber could be affected. (See Myth #4!) It's essential to follow the manufacturer's recommendations for the specific rubber compound used in your gaskets and consider the intended application conditions. If you have concerns about the impact of blooming on your rubber gaskets, it's advisable to consult with the manufacturer or supplier for guidance tailored to your specific situation. Myth #3: Rubber Products Have a Short Lifespan Another common fallacy is that rubber products have a short lifespan. In reality, when crafted with precision, high-quality materials, and the right formulation, rubber products can have a long shelf life of over a decade. While natural rubber may be more susceptible to environmental factors, modern engineered rubber products, with the right formulations and additives, can exhibit impressive durability. The lifespan is often determined by factors like storage conditions, exposure to chemicals, and adherence to manufacturer recommendations. Myth #4: Rubber Products Can be Stored Anywhere Rubber products actually are quite sensitive and need specific types of protection and care. Exposure to sunlight, UV rays, extreme temperatures, and certain chemicals can impact the longevity of rubber. Implementing protective measures to safeguard your engineered rubber products will ensure optimal performance and durability over time. At all stages between manufacture and use, the seals should be stored in accordance with the recommendations given in ISO 2230:
Ensure the Longevity of Your Rubber Products If you want reliability in the engineered rubber products you purchase, look for companies who use high quality materials, the right formulation, and store your products with care.
